AdTool is a unique advertising technology, simply: you select products from our merchants and AdTool displays these products on your website in the design of your choice or making.

AdTool consists of 2 simple elements, a Content Unit and a Template.


A Content Unit is a selection of products you pick from the AdTool product database - the product database is populated by the product feeds our merchants send to TradeDoubler. You create and manage your Content Units all through an easy to use step-by-step interface.

A Template is the name given to the actual design, layout and formatting of how you want the products in a Content Unit to be displayed on your site. The Template you chose from the interface, or create in the AdTool interface, is effectively the presentation of the Content Unit on your website.

An AdTool, therefore, is the combination of a Content Unit and a Template. You must have both to create an AdTool unit.

An AdTool may consist of a Template which can display 10 products at a time but the Content Unit attached to the Template contains 45 products. The AdTool unit will still only display 10 products at a time from the Content Unit, but, will rotate in the 10 products which offer you the best performance. AdTool is therefore also an inventory optimisation technology, not only does AdTool display dynamic product data it optimises the best performing products so they are given more impressions.

Content Units must have more products stored in it than can actually be displayed in the Template you chose. If an AdTool Template is expecting 10 products to display but you only have 8 products in the Content Unit attached to the AdTool then a blank space will appear. Content Units can currently contain a maximum of 100 products.

Affiliates, Merchants and TradeDoubler staff can all create Content Units and Templates in the TradeDoubler interface.

Affiliates may see a TradeDoubler, or Merchant Template they like but want to change slightly - in the AdTool interface you can "Copy" the TradeDoubler template over to your Template section and modify the template using the simple editor. As you take your first steps with AdTool the easiest way for you to create attractive templates is to copy the TradeDoubler templates to your section and reverse engineer these.

The first time you Show Code / Preview your AdTool it will take longer than normal to display. This is because our AdTool system is writing the output to the cache, the next time the AdTool unit is displayed it will be a lot faster.

If you go to Show Code / Preview and you receive an error message, the following reasons are:

• You do not have enough products in the Content Unit you selected for the Template you want the Content Unit to display in.
• The site you selected from the Show Code / Preview page does not have an active relationship with the merchant's products you selected for your Content Unit.

You must have a Content Unit with products in it (or chose a TradeDoubler one).

You must have a Template to display the Content Unit in (or choose a TradeDoubler one).

You must have an active relationship with any advertiser that you wish to include products for in your content units.
